Obelisk marking the place of Leszek the White’s death

During the 1227 meeting of provincial dukes, Leszek the White, the Prince of Kraków and Sandomierz, was slain in a field near Marcinkowo Górne. His death had far-reaching consequences for Polish history. The events in Gąsawa and Marcinkowo Górne shattered the hopes of reuniting the parts of fragmented Poland, delaying it by nearly 100 years.

In 2008, to commemorate the 780th anniversary of Leszek the White’s death, the obelisk that marks the place of his death was rebuilt. The first monument was built here as early as 1883.
