The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The church was built in the years 1959–60, but the history of the local parish dates back to 1355. It is a brick sanctuary which has no features representative of any style. The main altar is composed of Manneristic elements from the first half of the 17th century. In its central part there is the sanctuary’s greatest treasure: the miraculous picture of the Mother of God from Gościeszyn, also called the Madonna in the Mystical Garden – a 15th-century work of Dutch art. Since time immemorial the image of Mary has been particularly worshipped, and pilgrims came here as early as the 15th century. Over the following centuries the cult of the Lady from Gościeszyn was very strong, as was proved by the number of votive offerings. Before the beginning of the Second World War, the pilgrims covered the last hundred metres on their knees. After 1945 the pilgrimages were prohibited, and the cult faded a little.

In 1992 the miraculous painting was stolen. The search lasted six years, but the painting was only returned to the main altar in 2005. In 2000 the Metropolitan of Gniezno established the regional sanctuary of the Mother of God from Gościeszyn.
